Imagine the scenario where you open your browser to go to a particular page. Instead of opening the page, a load of pop ups jump up on the screen and you find yourself redirected to another page. Perplexed? This is the work of the Virtumonde viruses. Regarded as the No.1 spyware threat, Virtumonde along with Vundo (infections relating to downloadable trojans) infections can cause quite a problem as they are hard to remove.
An application produced by Atribune and aimed at solely removing Virtumonde and Vundo infections from the computer is the VundoFix. A basic cleaning tool, it performs brute scans on the registry and files that are responsible for uploading Vundo onto ones computer. It also uses a backlist which contains random files selected via examination of the binary strings within the files. Scans are performed on the backlist and any files suspected to contain malicious threats would be repaired or deleted.

Limitations of VundoFix:

Although VundoFix has provided the user with a solution for Virtumonde virus detection and removal, there are a few limitations that one has to consider.
. The backlist contained by VundoFix selects random files that are suspected to have viruses. The reach of VundoFix is therefore limited and cannot cover the entire extent of the infection. This in turn makes it less than 100% accurate.
. The method of scanning used by VundoFix (binary string search within the files) contains numerous permutations. This increases the time taken for the scan to complete and also slows down the speed of the system quite a bit.
