A tool which is used to effectively restore the password of PDF documents that are created using Adobe Applications is the PDF Password Cracker 3.0. In addition to restoring the password, the restrictions on the file can also be removed enabling the file to be copied, edited or printed. This method supports only standard PDF security and does not apply to third party plug-in. All versions of Acrobat are supported including version 8.0 with instant recovery of passwords.
The standard security passwords present in PDF documents comprise of owner passwords which have access to file restrictions and user passwords that have general access to the file without modification capabilities. PDF Password Cracker is able to search for both types of passwords by using brute force and dictionary based attacks which have high speed. In addition to this, the newer version uses Key Search attack, which supports 40 bit decryption of PDF files. More security options like removal of thumbnails, java script code, book marks, private data, digital signatures and metadata from PDF files are also supported. Once decrypted, the passwords as well as the file restrictions are removed.
The tool however fails to perform on documents that are user password protected in the case where both the user password and the owner password for that particular PDF file.
