With the growth of computers and the internet, there arises a need to protect the PC as a whole from threats that may arise from within the system or may attack the system via the internet. In the case of network related threats, apart from viruses, trojans, spyware and malware that may infect the system, a great concern to users would be the privacy of stored data. Great care must be taken by users to protect the information stored on the system from being stolen by hackers and identity thieves.

A lot of tools are available in the market to provide security with different techniques and at various levels of the system. One such tool that protects user and data privacy is the JAP 00.05.056 project. The newer version supports Java 1.4.2 and higher versions.

Aimed at providing complete security to a user on the network, JAP uses a static address which is used simultaneously by multiple JAP users. JAP works on the principle of mix cascade technology. Accordingly, instead of a user connecting directly to web server, the user goes through encryption techniques via several intermediaries. These intermediaries are called mixes. The user can choose from a set of predefined sequence of mixes (called mix cascade) and connect to the web server by following the sequence. This way, no website or peeping toms can figure out which user visited which website.

Consider the case of hundreds of users using these intermediary mix cascade sequences on the network. For prowlers, identifying a single user system is practically impossible as the user’s connection is hidden among all the other connections. The only way to separate a single user system and its connection from all the so called connections is to integrate all the intermediaries and make them work together to reduce the animosity.

The intermediaries themselves are provided by independent, ambiguous institutions who do not keep logs of the data or share it with other providers. The integrity of these institutions will be checked and monitored by independent watch dogs who act like normal JAP users.
