DotNetNuke has a very basic core which can be extended using pluggable modules that provides the user with additional functionality that allows the user to customize the look and feel of individual sites using customized skins.

DotNetNuke includes around a dozen basic modules with the core DotNetNuke distribution and also further modules can be downloaded from DotNetNuke website that includes E-Commerce systems, Photo Galleries, Blogs, Forums, Wiki and Mailing list options.

DotNetNuke 4.9 provides a skinning architecture that does a clear segregation between design and content allowing the web designer to develop skins without requiring any special knowledge of development in ASP.NET thus allowing the user only with a basic knowledge of HTML and skin preparation to develop the sites.

Like modules, the final compiled skins can be uploaded and automatically installed through the administration pages. If the compiled skin does not contain an ASP.NET user control file, then the DotNetNuke builds one based on various tokens included in the HTML file which refer to various sections, placeholders and/or modules of a DotNetNuke-produced page.
