BitDefender Total Security 2009 is an application aimed at providing proactive protection against malicious threats like spyware, viruses, spam, adware and hackers. In the process, the application takes care of the system via maintenance options and provides effective data backup facilities. PC protection against malicious threats in a real time environment using advanced techniques that detect and remove threats at the earliest possible stage. This also includes hidden threats called Root kits. New spamming techniques are responded to faster due to the new adaptive engines which in turn keep harmful websites and malicious emails at bay. System load is kept to a minimum with almost no user intervention as all tasks are automated.

The BitDefender Parental controls enable blocks to be placed on inappropriate websites and unsolicited emails. Adaptive firewalls effectively hide the PC from possible hackers in the network while allowing for secure transfer of personal information. Unauthorized logins into a Wi-Fi network is also taken care of by having a track of all users who login into the network.
Back up options involve creating copies of the data to be stored on local and removable drives like CDs or DVDs. According to a pre set schedule, only new files are scanned and backed up automatically thereby preventing the creation of back up files for files that already have a back up copy. All unnecessary files and registry entries are automatically erased to improve system performance and gain the advantage of more storage space. Files and file traces are also removed to prevent recovery.
