Consider the scenario where the user’s system has been infected with a virus. The user has to figure out a way to remove the virus and the infected files without affecting the other files in the system. In most of the cases, the only way to deal with such a situation is to restore the system with backups. This tends to be a time consuming ordeal especially if the user is in the middle of an important work or has numerous amounts of files that need to be backed up and then restored. A better alternative would be to use a tool that is able to detect and remove the particular virus or worm and in the process, remove only those specific files that have been infected.
Avast! Virus Cleaner is one such tool that is capable of performing the above mentioned task to perfection. Free for download and use, the virus removal tool helps users to remove only selected worm or virus infections from the system.
In the case of infections due to worms, these entities often schedule themselves to run along with the operating system or any application that is being processed. If the user deletes the worm by just pressing delete, there is a strong chance for the operating system not being able to open applications on which the worm had manifested. The Avast! Virus Cleaner eases this burden by not only removing the worm but also fixing the system registry as well as the links to the start up files so that all traces of the worm are completely removed from the system. In the case of worms duplicating themselves to additional files that are unwanted, the tool effectively removes the worm and deletes the worm and the additional files created by it as well.
Some of the worms that are detected and removed by Avast! Virus Cleaner include:
Win32:Badtrans [Wrm], Win32:Beagle [Wrm], Win32:Blaster [Wrm], Win32:BugBear [Wrm], Win32:NetSky [Wrm], Win32:Nimda [Wrm], Win32:Opas [Wrm], Win32:Parite (aka Pinfi), Win32:Sasser [Wrm], Win32:Swen [Wrm], Win32:Tenga, Win32:Yaha [Wrm], and Win32:Zafi [Wrm] to name a few.
The process of virus disinfection is as follows:
. The tool is able to run automatically after the user presses the Start Button.
. The operating system memory is scanned and traces of worms if any are removed or deactivated.
. All local hard disks will be scanned.
. All items in the startup folder will be scanned and worms if any will be immediately removed or fixed.
. All infected files will be removed or fixed including additional working and temporary files.
. If a restart is required to complete the process of disinfection, the user is prompted and necessary action is taken.
The same process can be performed by the experienced users through command line arguments.
Some important facts that need to be noted while performing the disinfection process include:
. Not to run any other application while the scan is in progress.
. All other antivirus engines present in the system need to be turned off before commencing the scan.
. Administrator privileges are required for certain parts of the scan to run smoothly. However, this may help the worm to spread. In this case, the user is recommended to log in as a normal user and enter the administrator login and password details in the dialog box provided by Avast! Virus Cleaner. Hence, the tool will run with administrator privileges though the user is logged in as a guest.
