Inspired from the famous Cold War Crisis which is one of the most complete virtual military simulations in the gaming world, Armed Assault takes realism from its predecessor and takes it altogether to another high level. The remaining true to realism and game plan which was open ended has made it highly popular among other hardcore shooting games in the market.
The Armed Assault game is set in the fictional war torn island of South Sahrani where a contingent of US soldiers are posted so that they can train the local people in the art of warfare. But unfortunately the island is soon invaded and the major mission for the US contingent is to hold the ground and fight till the cavalries arrive for help. The mission is divided in two sections for the US soldiers, one is essential and the other is auxiliary. The essential missions are the basic warfare and mandatory battles, which can take a long time to finish. The auxiliary missions are optional and take 20 to 30 minutes to complete and if successful these are like bonus points. Unlike other famous assault and fighter games, Armed assault does not project the player as one man army or lone hero rather it’s about teamwork.
The player plays with the team and becomes a devoted soldier of the contingent. The entire team works together to outwit, outmaneuver and finish the enemy troops on the largest free form levels. The warfare in Armed Assault is stripped down to its bare necessities which means that it is harsh and crude and without any glitz and glamour from Hollywood films. The levels of the warfare stretch out limit less and can go in any direction. Sometimes it becomes a rather trying job for the player as his team jogs endlessly along side the sprawling countryside sometimes hiding in jungles and rocks so that it avoids enemy patrolling. At other time, the player will find himself at the back of trucks which will carry them to the warfront, if the player wants to speed up the action then he can easily choose speed up to skip.
Realism: It prevails in every aspect of the game and it is this realism that makes the combat even more intriguing. Sometimes has to fight battles shooting at the enemies who seem nothing more than dark specs on the horizon.
Survival: Survival in the mission is the biggest challenge and victory in Armed Assault game. To save himself, the player has to often slither in mud and dirt fighting against searing bullet sounds whizzing past his ears and still continuously firing at the enemy lines. The entire team forms groups to cover every aspect and angle and also follow and give commands to each other strictly. Death is at every nook and corner in this intense firefights since most of times the player is just a couple of bullet away from death. One has to use combined forces if the player wants his stretched force to win against the vast enemy numbers. This can be contemplated by giving commands from a third person tactical view point, which proves much more beneficial than the clumsy first person menu command system.
Armed Assault Use of vehicles: This game allows not only battle on foot but allows fighting with the help of a number of vehicles which range from jeeps, tankers, aircraft to choppers. Each has different handling, turret positions, physics and speeds and efficiently using them is a battle in itself.
The player is asked to perform important tasks single handedly for his teammates or for turning the battle in his teams favor. The games open ended feature allows the user to tackle every task and battle in various ways. Realistic, hardcore virtual warfare with massive levels, harsh environments and free nature makes the player feel as if he is in a real war and at times it feels so real that one wonders how is that possible that one has not suffered any real bodily harm.
