Imagine the comfort of carrying the whole world in a hand held device. With the advancement of technology, new and powerful products are ever on the rise which provide the user a whole lot of options to choose from. A suitable addition to the list of promising inventions is the hand held device. Suitable for users who work while travelling, hand held devices come with many features incorporated into the small design. The functionalities provided by these devices range from simple application processing to providing wireless connection possibilities for data transfer. Appropriate software needs to be installed in the devices to support the required functions.
A software utility that helps users to view Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) files on hand held devices, namely Pocket PCs, is the Adobe Reader for Pocket PC. In addition to providing the facilities needed to view PDF documents, the tool also makes it easier for users to make slide shows and digital editions with the Pocket PC.
The software uses two components that work together. The first component, called the ActiveSync Filer runs on the Windows Platform, prepares untagged PDF files and transfers them to the Pocket PC. These files can be viewed in their original format. The Pocket PC is the reader and enables the user to view PDF files from the desktop computer anywhere and at anytime. The second component enables the PDF files to be tagged which provide the user with the best possible reading experience because text and images are auto fit to screen size. Tagged PDF files can be created from numerous sources like Adobe PageMaker 7.0, Adobe InDesign 2.0, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard and Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional to name a few.
Some of the features of Adobe Reader for Picket PC include:
. Provision for wireless printing to a remote printer from the hand held device.
. Provision to send forms either by email or directly to the destination server using a cable or a cradle.
. Provision to support mobile data entry wherein the user is able to submit data in forms using the hand held device over a wireless network. In the case of the use being offline, the data is stored and then transmitted once the connection is reestablished.
. Provision to view slide shows wherein the user can share slide shows generated by Adobe Photoshop Album Software on the hand held device. The slide show can be presented either in the landscape mode or the portrait mode.
